Lankan photographer's impressions of Japan

by Anjana Gamage

A photographic exhibition titled " Japan the beautiful" by T. G. Sunil Wickrama will be held at the Harold Peiris Gallery of the Lionel Wendt theatre from October 15 to 17. A total number of 55 top quality photographs covering a range of topics will be exhibited. The exhibition will be opened by Hideaki Matsuo, the first secretary (Public Relations) of the Japanese Embassy.

Although Sunil Wickrama 'clicks' the camera focused on Japan, his native place was Waduramba, Galle where he was educated at a Central College there and later moved to Mahinda College, Galle.

"I did Commerce for A/Ls. But my love with art never dies. After my studies, I joined a ceramic company as an artist. While I was there, I got an opportunity to go to Japan for a training course. It was a trip that changed my whole life", he said.

"I am a freelance photographer. I have travelled extensively in Japan within the last 24 years and I'm in love with the country and the nation. Later my career was in travel and tourism, initially representing a renowned resort in the Maldives as the Japanese speaking guest relation officer way back in the early eighties and as the Managing Director of a leading travel firm which has a substantial market share in the Japanese inbound tourist market to Sri Lanka, he said.

According to Sunil, all these facts have allowed him the freedom to travel about to all corners of Japan mingling with her people. " As I took to photography seriously ten years ago having qualified technically I had this dream of doing an exhibition on Japan: the country and a nation I love, admire and know so well. On one hand it certainly is a dream coming true and on the other, a great privilege being able to educate the general public of Sri Lanka on a country they always look up to and have a very strong relationship with", he emphasised.

Apart from his interest in photography, Sunil Wickrama has produced two teledramas: "Meeduma" and "Dawala Kanya" and also started a Production House in Sri Lanka with the collaboration of a Japanese partner as well.

A few years ago, he obtained a Diploma in Photography from the Sri Lanka National Photographic Art Society.
