Govt expects homeguards to be released soon - Ranaviraja

by Rajmi Manatunga

Law and Order and Public Security Ministry Secretary Tilak Ranaviraja said yesterday that the Government will be forced to take stern action if the LTTE refuses to release the two homeguards held in their custody. Ranaviraja told the media yesterday that the demand put forward by the LTTE that ten of its men be released in return for the release of the two home guards was 'totally illegal and immoral'as also stated by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and the international community.

"As things stand today we cannot go and free the two homeguards from LTTE custody. But we are trying our best through the Peace Secretariat and the SLMM to release them as soon as possible," he said.

He further stated that they expected the LTTE to release the homeguards within the next few weeks since eight of the LTTE suspects have already been released on bail adding that the others were likely to be enlarged on bail that day(yesterday).
