News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Anura to discuss expiry of multi-fibre agreement with EU members by Anjana Gamage The expiry of the Sri Lankan Multi-Fibre Agreement will be one of the main issues that will be discussed with European Union members and other relevant parties by Minister of Investment Promotion, Industry and Tourism Anura Bandaranaike who is now in Brussels, Secretary to the Ministry of Investment Promotion and Industry Dr. U. Vidanapathirana told the "Daily News". According to him Minister Bandaranaike will address European Parliamentarians in Brussels on October 16 on " A GSP Scheme to meet the development challenges of the 21st century". Following his address the Minister will call on senior EU Commission members. His address to the Development Co-operation Committee of the European Parliament will be to sensitise decision makers in Europe concerning the need to provide substantial and a speedy redress with regard to the difficulties that Sri Lanka will face once the multiple agreement ends, sources further said. Minister Bandaranaike has also taken note of fears expressed in many quarters of a serious threat to the jobs of many due to the end of the quota system in 2005 in terms of the multiple agreement. "There is a very promising European market for our apparel industry. Therefore, no doubt that the Minister will take this opportunity to obtain an enhanced export market for Sri Lanka and sell Sri Lanka as an attractive prospect for investments during his visit". he said. Meanwhile, during the Brussels tour, Minister Bandaranaike will begin the process of establishing high level political contacts between senior EU personalities and the UPFA Government as well. Minister Bandaranaike is accompanied by the Chairman, Board of Investment (BOI), Saliya Wickremesooriya. |
