by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Society of Government Pharmacists has threatened to launch a sick note campaign on October 15 in all hospitals in the North-East province urging the authorities to remove pharmacists who had been recruited without a proper training. "A number of pharmacists who had not been given a proper training have been appointed to several hospitals in the North and this would seriously affect the health service," the Society's General Secretary Harendra Kuruppu told the Daily News yesterday. He said those pharmacists have been given a training by an NGO in the North. "This is in contrast to the normal procedure where pharmacists have to undergo a proper two year training at the Health Department." Kuruppu noted that a pharmacist should be registered with the Medical College Council as a proficient pharmacist before being recruited to the Government service."Therefore, those appointments have violated the approved recommendations of the Establishment Director and also the Medical Ordinance." He said their society will resort to trade union action on October 15 if the authorities fail to remove those newly recruited pharmacists by October 14. "We will launch our trade union action in all hospitals in the North-East especially Teaching Hospitals in Jaffna and Batticaloa, General Hospital in Ampara and Base Hospitals in Kalmunai North and South," he added. |
