Major General held for bribery

Major General D. S. K. Wijesuriya produced before Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena by Bribery and Corruption Department officials was released on Rs. 10,000 cash bail and a bond of Rs. 1 million with two sureties.

Bribery officials filing a report before court said yesterday investigations were conducted on a complaint that the Major General allegedly failed to account for Rs. 1.9 million which he had spent on the construction of a house.

Answering the Judge, the Bribery officials said the investigations had been completed.

Asoka Weerasooriya who appeared with Hasitha Ponnamperuma for the Major General moved court to grant bail to his client as the investigation had been completed. The Judge, directed the Major General to obtain permission from court if he wants to leave the country and told him to appear in court on January 13, 2005.
