Child's rabies death; inquiry today

by Edward Arambewela

Dr. Wimal Jayantha, Director, Lady Ridgeway Children's Hospital, Colombo will hold a preliminary inquiry into the death of a 10-year-old child who died of rabies in August this year allegedly due to the negligence of a doctor in the accident ward.

The doctor had allegedly failed to give the second ARV injection to the child.

Dr. Jayantha told the Daily News that the child's father, K. Gunaratne in a complaint to him had said that in July this year, his daughter's face had been bitten by a stray dog and she was brought to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital accident ward.

The doctor had attended to the child's facial injury and given an injection and sent her home. In his complaint, Gunaratne had said when he inquired whether the child would have to be brought for the second injection because she was bitten by a stray dog, the doctor had said this was not needed and assured him the child would be alright and there was no need to worry.

Gunaratne had admitted the child again. In the ward, her condition had become worse and she had started frothing profusely from the mouth and shouting. Doctors had said she had developed rabies and nothing could be done to save her life. Gunaratne had alleged in his complaint that at this stage, the doctor had given her an injection, which he suspected put the child to sleep. Within a few hours, the child had died.

Gunaratne states that even though he wanted a postmortem, doctors had not complied with his request. Dr. Jayantha said he had called for a full report from the ward and the inquiry would be held today.
