Former DSS MV Vice Principal killed by speeding jeep driven by JSS Chief's son

Gayan de Mel, described as the son of Sirinal de Mel, Secretary of the UNP affiliated Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya was taken into custody by Police after his jeep allegedly knocked down and killed the 63 year old former Vice Principal of D. S. Senanayake Maha Vidyalaya, near Kanatte junction in Borella.

The victim H. M. Gunapala who is also the current Registrar of the same school died on admission to the Colombo National Hospital. The incident took place at around 11.30 pm on Sunday.

The jeep which was driven by the suspect Gayan de Mel was heading towards Narahenpita from Borella when it had hit the victim's motorcycle at a spot near the Old Bullers Road. According to police the jeep which belonged to the JSS Secretary was travelling at a very high speed.

The impact hurled the motorcycle a distance of nearly 62 meters. According to Police Sergeant Ratnayake the jeep had been speeding at around 90 Km per hour. The suspect Lakshapathy Maha Vidanage Gayan Maximan de Mel the son of Sirinal de Mel Secretary of UNP Trade Union the Jathika Sevaka Sanganmaya was released on Rs. 5,000 cash bail and 25,000 surety bail. His licence too had been suspended.
