SLT Asia Foundation 'Spreading the wealth of knowledge'

Asia Foundation in partnership with Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) donated books worth Rs. 250,000 to the Rajarata University in Anuradhapura. The formal handing over ceremony was held at the University recently. The chief guest on the occasion was Prof. K. Wijerathna, Vice Chancellor, Rajarata University.

This donation followed last year's agreement between SLT and The Asia Foundation, a leading non profit organisation working in Sri Lanka since 1954, to partner an islandwide book donation program. The program which looks to further the education needs within the country, carried out under the theme "Spreading the wealth of knowledge", will enable schools, Universities, libraries and other English education centres to develop their Kills and also promote English as a link language.

Prof. Wijerathna said that the book donation program would enhance the collection of books in the University library, and as the University is much in need of education material this program is crucial for the development of the University. "The need to upgrade the library becomes essential as the University is located in a metropolitan area and the students are unable to access other libraries," he said.

The first donation of books to the Rajarata University is a method to enable more such education material to be given to the institute", A. Nallathambi Director Books for Asia Program said.

Asia Foundation said. He said the Asia Foundation will donate books mainly for Universities, affiliated Universities, Teachers Training Colleges, Schools and Non-profitable Education Institutes and expressed his gratitude to SLT which is the single largest corporate donor to the Book for Asia Program of the Asia Foundation.
