Launch of GTZ value chain component timely - Prema Cooray by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) has planned to assist four important sub sectors of the Sri Lankan economy under the "Capacity Building for Qualified and Competitive Employment (CBQCE) Program said Senior Advisor GTZ, Dr. Peter Richter. He was speaking at the launch of its' latest initiative Value Chain Promotion Component at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently. The four sub sectors are spices, organic products, alternative tourism and rubber products. He said that this component has a strong and balanced group for each sector, known as Value Chain Core Group, identifying the activities and then implementing these activities together with the GTZ and other stakeholders who are ready to support the development of the particular sector. GTZ acts as a facilitator and catalyst working through the existing partners initiatives and institutions. He said that there are many issues that are specific to a particular sector and there are others that are common to a number of industry sectors known as cross cutting issues. The GTZ intends to assist the industry in addressing both types of issues, he said. CEO, Chamber of Commerce Prema Cooray said that the launch of the GTZ Value Chain Component is a timely initiative as it brings all the stakeholders together at one forum to identify and address the issues that affect a particular sector. The Chamber has made a conscious decision to take a direct pro-active role in the SMEs under the SME Desk Project of the Chamber and the Value Chain Promotion Component of the GTZ. President, Eco Tourism Society of Sri Lanka, Chandra de Silva and President of the Spice Cluster Sarada de Silva also out lined their action plans. |
