Impressive wins for Lanka The Sri Lanka men's team and the women's team recorded impressive victories over England on the opening day of their Indoor World Cup cricket tournament which commenced at the Austasia Sports Complex in Thalawathugoda yesterday. The Sri Lanka men's team beat England by 29 runs in the first match spearheaded by a fine all round performance from Thushendra de Soysa. The Lankans batting first scored 85 runs from their 16 overs with Thushendra de Soysa making a top score of 23 runs. In reply England manaed to score only 51 runs from their 16 overs with Thushendra de Soysa capturing 4 wickets for minus 10 runs. He received good support from Kryshantha Peiris who took 3 wickets for minus one run and S. Jayantha who returned figures of 4 wickets for minus seven runs. The Sri Lanka women's team also beat the England women's team by 59 runs in their opening match played yesterday. The Lankans rattled up an impressive 119 runs from their 16 overs with good contributions coming from N. Mendis (28), S. Lasanthi (20) and H. Fernando (23). In reply England managed to score only 60 runs from their 16 overs with Rose Fernando (3 for minus 18) and D. Rasangika (3 for 8) causing the damage. In another men's match South Africa beat UAE and in a women's match Australia defeated India. C.D. |
