World Bank funding project: NERDC to build 90,000 low-cost houses in North and East by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERDC) will assist the government to construct 90,000 cost effective houses in the North and East under the World Bank funding. The project will be completed by 2008, Head of Civil Engineering Department NERDC G. K. K. Ariyaratne said. NERDC has signed an agreement with the Provincial Council of the North and East to commence the first stage of this project in Ampara and Batticaloa this week. Forty 400 square feet model houses covering eight districts will be constructed during the initial stage and each house will cost Rs. 150,000 according to the estimates given before the latest price increase, Ariyaratne said. The main objective of NERDC is to expand the technology through carrying out on site training for talented people in the area and create self-employment opportunities for them. A three day training program has been designed for those who participate in the workshops. The GA of the relevant Provincial Council will select suitable people to follow these training programs and deserving people will be given the houses. There will be model houses in each district and the GAs have invited the interested parties to see the model houses before submitting their requests. The cost effective building technology is mainly associated with pre-cast building components and therefore it could save up to 30 per cent of the construction cost compared with the conventional method as they use less sand and wood. The period of construction is also less compared with conventional method. The main features of cost effective building technology are foundation construction techniques, Slip form wall construction, wherever appropriate, Composite floor slabs using pre-stressed and pre-cast components, a variety of roof construction technology and use of a pre-cast concrete door and window frames and other components, Ariyaratne said. |
