40,000 blind children in Bangladesh DHAKA, Friday (Xinhua) There are some 40,000 blind children now in Bangladesh, said ophthalmologists of the country. The New Nation Wednesday quoted Prof. Shah M Bulbul Islam, an ophthalmologist of Dhaka National Medical College, as saying that the sights of more than 68 percent blind children, or roughly seven out every 10, could have been saved. He said 80 percent of the child blindness are avoidable. Dr. M Shahabuddin, associate professor of National Institute of Opthalmology noted that there are only 626 ophthalmologists in the country against the minimum need of 1,400 ophthalmologists. Of them, 350 practise in the capital, he added. |
