Australia take firm grip on First Test

BANGALORE, India, Friday (Reuters) - Australia took a firm grip on the first test against India after Glenn McGrath took four wickets to help establish a big lead on Friday.

Fast bowlers McGrath and Jason Gillespie ran through the tail with the new ball to dismiss India for 246, 228 runs behind in reply to their 474 all out.

Australia opted against the follow-on and reached 127 for four in their second innings at close, an overall lead of 355.

Openers Justin Langer (0), Matthew Hayden (30), Simon Katich (39) and Darren Lehmann (14) were the batsmen dismissed.

McGrath, back in the side after an injury lay-off, finished with four for 55 as India, resuming day three on 150 for six, were bowled out close to tea.

Wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel (46) and tail-ender Irfan Pathan (31) clung on to add 60 runs for the seventh wicket to prevent a total collapse.

Gillespie and Michael Kasprowicz finished with two wickets apiece as the fast bowlers shared eight wickets.

Leg-spinner Shane Warne took the other two.

The other three tests will be played in Madras, Nagpur and Bombay.
