Pirith in memory of SWRD, Sirimavo The Sri Lanka Freedom Party Headquarters will conduct an all night Pirith ceremony today followed by a morning alms giving to the Maha Sangha the following day in honour of late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, founder of the five fold force of Maha Sangha, physicians, teachers, farmers and workers. The pinkama will also be held in remembrance of late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the world's first woman Prime Minister. After the morning alms-giving, the Colombo South Co-operative Society will donate artificial limbs worth Rs. 10,000 among disabled children. Commemorative Committee President, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Treasurer Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Minister Anura Bandaranaike and Committee Secretary and Western Province Governor S. Alavi Moulana will participate. ###### Vijaya's 59th birth anniversary The 59th birth anniversary of late Sri Lanka Mahajana Paksha leader and humanist Vijaya Kumaratunga will be commemorated with a floral tribute at the foot of the Vijaya Kumaratunga statue opposite the Vijaya Kumaratunga Memorial Hospital Seeduwa today at 9 a.m. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga will be the chief guest. Director, Vijaya Kumaratunga Foundation Herman Weerasooriya said this will be followed by the fixing of contact lenses on 10 needy eye patients at the hospital under a surgical program conducted under the guidance of Consultant Eye Surgeon Dr. Costa and a blood donation campaign in memory of late Mr. Kumaratunga. ###### Needs help Mrs W.H.N. Perera (32) of No. 418, B, Kandy Road, Kelaniya is suffering from chronic renal failure. Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Rushika D. Lanarolle has recommended a kidney transplant to save her life. The surgery is estimated to cost Rs. 600,000. Mrs. Perera says her mother has agreed to donate a kidney. She says her family is unable to foot this bill due to their present economic plight. She requests philanthropists and the general public to assist her cause by sending whatever financial contributions to help expedite the surgery. All contributions should be remitted to account number 0060 - 343029 - 101 at the Seylan Bank, Kiribathgoda Branch. ##### Pakistani had heroin in his shoes by Sarath Malalasekera The Customs Narcotics Control Unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday afternoon detected a Pakistani national with 316 grams of heroin valued over Rs.1.5 million concealed in a pair of shoes. The detection was made by Assistant Superintendent of Customs Nissanka Ratnayake. Investigations directed by Deputy Director of Customs V. Sudusinghe handed over the suspect and the heroin to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations. ###### Cab allegedly driven by UNP MP runs over by Malmi Sellahannadi A 67-year-old retired civil engineer died after he was knocked down by a double cab on a pedestrian crossing at Negombo last Thursday. The vehicle was allegedly driven by its owner UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Police said. Malnaydelage Henry Christopher of Rajasinghe Road, Negombo succumbed to his injuries at the National Hospital Colombo where he was rushed for emergency treatment. Malnaydelage Prasad, 31, the victim's son giving evidence before City Coroner Edward Ahangama said his father was a retired civil engineer formerly attached to the Road Development Authority. Sub-Inspector D.M.S.D. Perera of the Negombo police told the inquest that there were two 20-70 metre brake marks of the rear tyres of the double cab. City Coroner Edward Ahangama postponed the inquest for October 23. The post-mortem was held by Dr. M.N. Ruhul Haq. Evidence was led by Negombo police. |
