Politburo Member of the Chinese Communist Party Wu Guanzheng called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the President's House yesterday. The Chinese leader conveyed the good wishes of President Jiang Zemin of the People's Republic of China to President Kumaratunga. The initial discussions centred on traditional Sino-Sri Lanka links and the ties the Bandaranaike family had with China, a press release said yesterday. President Kumaratunga thanked the People's Republic of China's continued support in cultural and economic fields. She made special reference to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall which has grown to be a landmark in Sri Lanka. China has pledged assistance for the proposed new centre for performance arts and will soon send an expert group of architects and construction engineers to make an initial study of the project. Wu said this would be another step towards cementing the friendship between the two countries. President Kumaratunga and Wu discussed avenues of further strengthening economic ties, particularly in the fields of tourism and investment. A Chinese trade delegation is also in Sri Lanka holding meetings with Sri Lankan businessmen. Wu on behalf of the Chinese leader extended an invitation to the Sri Lankan leader to visit China. President Kumaratunga recalled her last visit to China in 1996 and said she was looking forward to see for herself the recent developments in China. |
