National carrier signs up with TAASL:

SriLankan to introduce special packages to Europe

By Shirajiv Sirimane

SriLankan airlines will introduce special airline discount packages to Europe soon. According o the Manager Sri Lanka Ranil Wagiswara this is being introduced for destinations in London, Germany and France. He said that the airline had an overwhelming response for their packages, which were introduced last month.

These special fares were offered to Bangkok, Singapore India and the Maldives.

The airline had to extend their offer since the demand was so high.

The airfares were offered almost 50 percent less than the usual fare. This offer was part of the service that was offered to commemorate their 25th year anniversary celebrations.

"We had a 120 percent demand for these special fares," he said. The most preferred destination was Singapore since the country offers visa on arrival.

The second destination, which was in demand, was Bangkok and India followed.

"We see ha here are lot of Sri Lanka traveling to Europe to see their relatives and this is why this package would be introduced," he said. "We are expecting a high demand for these packages," he said.

He said that the airline is now concentrating on their forthcoming new designations in India and specially China. "These would be very exciting," he said. meanwhile, SriLankan Airlines signed a document in preparation to train 200 officials of the Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka (TAASL). This is the first time that TAASL members are being given this opportunity.

Wagiswara said that there is a big demand for qualified travel agents.

"So far there has been no programme to train school leavers and we are hoping to look into this area, giving it the first preference in the future", he said.

President TAASL Nihal Perera said that a similar system is available in India and this will fill a void in the local travel industry.
