Unique opportunity to win a World Cup

Sri Lanka will have a unique and an excellent opportunity to win a World Cup, as seven nations will battle it out for the World Indoor Cricket Crown in Sri Lanka.

13 teams from seven nations have confirmed participation for the Fifth Hutch Indoor Cricket World Cup 2004, to be held at Austasia International Indoor Cricket Stadium, Thalawatugoda from October 9 to 16.

The Sri Lankan men's and women's teams are training hard at Austasia nets, which would be the venue for the tournament.

As the President of the Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) Salinda Dissanayake said this provides a unique opportunity for Sri Lanka to win a World Cup on home soil for the first time in the country's sporting history. He further said the enthusiasm, the interest and the skills shown by Sri Lankans in cricket, would carry to the sport within the nets providing an ideal opportunity to show our true champion spirits.

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, India and United Arab Emirates along with the hosts Sri Lanka will field teams for the men's tournament, while only the United Arab Emirates among the seven participating countries, will not be sending a team for the women's category of the tournament.

Arrivals of these teams started from the early hours yesterday with the defending champions Australia coming first.

The Secretary of CICA V.G. Karunasena said that all arrangements have been finalized for the hosting of Sri Lanka's first ever World Cup Tournament in one venue. "Everything is ready for conducting the World Cup, we are awaiting to welcome the participating teams from different countries".

He requested that only the final touches be done, it is now left to the ardent lovers of the sport in the country to make it a success with their attendance at the tournament and encourage our own players striving to win a World Cup.
