Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Maha Nayaka Thera, the Maha Nayaka of the Malwatta Chapter of the Shayamopali Maha Nikaya, delivered at the inaugural meeting of the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation held at the Presidential Secretariat, Colombo on October 04.
The Most Ven. Maha Nayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter and other venerable members of the Maha Sangha, Reverend Clergy Members of the Catholic, Christian, Hindu, and Islam beliefs, Her Excellency the President, the Honourable Prime Minister and other Ministers, the Secretary to the President and all other devotees, It is with the pure and noble intention of ushering peace to our mother land that I address this inaugural meeting of the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation that was formed to re-establish peace in this island of Sri Lanka. I wish to express our delight and blessings for Her Excellency the President's resolute endeavour to establish this Advisory Council to usher in peace.
During the last two decades we have witnessed with disturbed mind the terror and cruelty of the awful war that brought mischievous and detrimental repercussions to the country. Uncertainty and terror reigned throughout our country beset with this horrendous process. The country lost thousands and thousands of valiant children in addition to the loss of invaluable individual lives and property. We are yet engulfed in the consequences of a dangerous and mischievous war. During this reign of terror our most venerated places of worship war devastated. Thousands and thousands of valiant sons of the nation including army commanders sacrificed their lives inheriting only their immortal gallantry.
We are unable to forget such unlimited dedication and sacrifice at any cost. It is our duty and responsibility to eternally reminisce their services with gratitude. This tragic atmosphere centring the North and the East pervades the entirety of this country while stalling the development process in a serious way.We were unable to carry out our every day life satisfactorily. "Jayan Veran Pasavathi The winner creates hatred in the mind of the loser. Loser lives in sorrow. One who lives in equanimity lives in tranquillity by renouncing both victory and defeat. This is the eternal truth pronounced by Buddha that we have to be mindful of when we contemplate on peaceful resolution of conflicts in a realistic manner.
The analyses and ideas professed by local and international intellectuals are diverse. Their justification maybe assessed in many ways but as the Mahanayaka of the Malwatte Chapter I categorically point out that the suggestions as solutions must be in conformity with the historical realities and development of Sri Lanka. During the past, the successive Governments brought about different strategies from time to time and created a debating atmosphere in their efforts to solve the problem. I wish to point out that the various ideologies and criticisms and practicability of such suggestions have to be considered without bias at this forum.
At the same time it is imperative that we have to remember the presence of many experiences we gained throughout a protracted period among various ethnic groups including Sinhala, Tamil and Muslims. We have to view from a civilized point of view the extent of each proposed solutions whether they were in conformity with justice, truthfulness, honesty and magnanimity on the part of parties involved. I wish success to the progress of the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation" that was established with the noble objective of creating a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka. May all be well with the blessings of the Triple Gem and the Sacred Tooth Relic. |
