by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture and Livestock Ministry has allocated a sum of Rs.310 million to implement 12 major projects to develop the livestock sector within the next three months. The ministry through the allocation of this money intends to make a rapid development in all key sectors in the livestock sphere mainly in the animal husbandry and dairy production sectors. The project also aims to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the dairy farmers, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News on Friday. He said 12 projects implemented utilising Rs.310 million have been targeted to upgrade the Veterinary Research Institutes at zonal and district level and implement the programs to empower the dairy farmers, increase fresh milk consumption and develop veterinary and animal services service sector, he said. These 12 projects will be implemented by the Department of Animal Production and Health, the National Livestock Development Board and the Milco Private Ltd which come under the Ministry purview. Therefore, the farms, research institutes and veterinary offices coming under these three institutions will also be developed using this money, he said. The 12 projects to be implemented include a project to empower dairy farmers, a Milco project to increase fresh milk consumption, animal food production, a mobile service to purchase cattle, a grass improvement programme, a goat purchasing programme, cultivating maize for animal foods, conducting mobile veterinary and animal service clinics, upgrading the Government's veterinary offices, upgrading the Livestock Research Institute and developing the dairy by-products, he said. |
