by Uditha Kumarasinghe The first consignment of imported rice of 2000 metric tons from Pakistan aimed at arresting the high rice prices in the local market will arrive in the country today. Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle decided to import rice to bring down the local price of rice which has been escalating. The Minister has made arrangements to import nearly 20,000 Metric tons of rice from India and Pakistan to provide rice to consumers at concessionary rates, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. The ship 'Dinnar Montag' carrying the first consignment of 2000 metric tons of rice is scheduled to dock at the Colombo Port at 10.00 am today, he said. He said the 2000 metric tons chiefly contain Sudu Kekulu and Samba rice varieties. A small amount of Basmathi rice is also included in the consignment. The Ministry has made arrangements to distribute this rice stock among the public through the CWE. He said a kilo of Samba will be distributed at Rs. 35 and Sudu Kekulu at Rs. 28. The spokesman said the Ministry has ordered 20,000 metric tons of rice from India and Pakistan to control the local rice prices. Consumers will be able to purchase rice at concessionary rates once the balance rice stocks arrive. |
