TNT International Express Colombo the logistics and mail carrier will donate proceedings collected during the 'Walk the World' event on June 20 to the World Food Program's (WFP's) local school feeding program.

The cheque for Rs. 302,000 will be handed over to WFP on October 8 at Trincomalee at the occasion of inaugurating the World Food Program's expanded school feeding program.

'Walk the World' was successful event initiated by TNT International Express to provide funds to the school feeding program. Muttiah Muralitharan participated in this event as WFP's ambassador fighting hunger.

TNT International Express plans to initiate the same program next year globally and expects a larger participation.

World Food program launched its 'Meals-in-Schools' pilot project on August 25, with its partners, Ministry of Resettlement and Refugees and the Ministry of Human Resources, Cultural Affairs and Education.

The project was carried out in five educational divisions namely Poonahari in Kilinochchi, Omanthai and Nadunkerny in Vavuniya, Medirigiriya in Polonnaruwa and Koralai Pattu North in Batticaloa. The pilot project was carried out by providing approx: 514 Kca meals to 23,487 children in 120 schools. WFP estimates that cost per child stands at Rs. 11 in providing a mid-day meal at school.

TNT by organising 205 fundraiser walks in 72 countries across 24 time zones raised 750,000 Euros. In these fund raising walks 38,000 of TNT staff, WFP staff and their families and friends participated with the purpose of assisting WFP's school feeding program worldwide.

On October 8, the Provincial Ministry of Education and WFP along with TNT staff will inaugurate the school feeding program at the Nilaveli Tamil Maha Vidyalayam, Trincomalee.

WFP has similar school feeding programs in other parts of the world and fed 15 million children in 69 countries in 2003.
