Lanka to hold three major IT conferences and exhibitions

by Irangika Range

Sri Lanka will host three major international IT conferences and exhibitions such as the ASOCIO ICT Summit and Exhibition 2004, the 6th International Information Technology Conference 2004(IITC) and the 2nd International e-Governance Conference 2004(ICEG) to promote the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the country.

The IITC 2004 and the ICEG 2004 are organised by the INFOTEL Society and managed by the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

The government has decided to support to organise these events by declaring them as National Events. The international events will be held from November 27 to December 1, which has been declared National ICT Week. This week will ensure that academia and the civil society, as well as the state and non-government sectors are afforded equal opportunity to participate and benefit.

The IITC will be held from November 29 to December 1 with pre-conference workshops on November 27 and 28. Pre conferences and workshops will be held at the UCSC while the IITC will be held at the BMICH. The IITC will focus on the key segment of growth within the local ICT industry. This is a good opportunity to present results of local ICT researchers at the conference.

As in previous years the IITC conference will result in the presentation of over 25 research papers on ICT. The ICEG will also be held from November 29 to December 1 along with IITC 2004. ICEG will be a major event in promoting the best practices in e-Governance through the participants who would be key state officials of the public sector. In addition to the customary keynote addresses by topical experts, a large number of research papers and reviews on current activities relating to ICT and e-Governance will be presented by professionals from all parts of the world.

The ASOCIO ICT Summit and exhibition 2004 from November 30 to December 5 at the BMICH will bring together over 600 delegates representing the ICT sectors and governments of over 24 countries who will participate in workshops, conferences and exhibitions. An important aspect of ASOCIO 2004 is the forum it will establish for private sector-public sector interaction. The ICT ministers' summit of the region will highlight all these processes. Sri Lanka has been chosen as the venue for this year due to the 20th anniversary of the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation(ASOCIO).

The ASOCIO exhibition and summit will be held this year under the theme "from policy to reality" and it will focus on subjects such as Management challenge for Government organisations, Government to Citizen relationships, Government to Government Relationships and Best Business Practices for effective Government.

Chairman of the INFOTEL Society Vidhayajohi, Prof. V. K. Samaranayake said the cabinet decision to allow duty free imports of exhibits and granting tax deductions for event related expenses are great opportunities for sponsors, exhibitors and conference participants to support the events.

All ministers and state agencies have been instructed to co-operate fully with the organisers and to make these three events a success. The government also decided to issue a commemorative stamp to mark the national ICT week," Prof. Samaranayake said.

"Sri Lanka is giving the highest priority to further develop the ICT industry which has great potential while at the same time introducing e-governance to exploit ICT for efficient citizens' services. The government's positive support for the promotion of ICT is most welcome and should be appreciated as such encouragement will promote the Sri Lankan ICT sector to move forward and contribute towards national development," Prof. Samaranayake said.

ASOCIO 2004 is funded and organised by the local ICT industry with the assistance of the INFOTEL society, a pan-industry body that specialises in conducting ICT events.

ASOCIO 2004 is being coordinated by a consortium of Sri Lankan ICT associations led by the Federation of Information Technology Industry Societies (FITIS).
