SLAAQP helps to introduce 5 S in Pakistan

Pakistan is taking several initiatives to encourage their enterprises to adopt modern management practices to meet the competitive environment that will present itself from next year. As part of these initiatives the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity (SLAAQP) President Sunil Wijesinha was invited to conduct a full day seminar on Super 5S and to present a paper on 'The Productivity and Quality Initiatives in Sri Lanka.

The Japanese 5S concept is very popular in Sri Lanka and well established here. With the introduction of the "Talki Akimoto Award" by Japan Sri Lankan Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) several companies including plantations, police stations and hospitals began implementing 5S and realising its many tangible and intangible benefits.

Sri Lanka has over ten years' experience in 5S with the first attempts being recorded as early as 1993. Over the years the standard of 5S has greatly improved and even the Japanese evaluators have been amazed at the standard.

Many Sri Lankan companies have extended their 5S activities to nearly by schools, hospitals and Government offices thereby spreading its implementation even wider.

Neighbouring countries such as India and Pakistan have been greatly impressed with the strides made by Sri Lanka and have sought the help of Sri Lankans to introduce 5S in their countries.

Three years ago a team from JASTECA led by Sunil G. Wijesinha helped the AOTS Alumni Society of Chennai to introduce a 5S competition for the State of Tamil Nadu. The Confederation of Indian Industry invited Sunil Wijesinha, President of SLAAQP to conduct two workshops on Super 5S in Cochin and Coimbatore.

The Asian Productivity organisation too in its efforts to popularise 5S in Bangladesh invited the President of SLAAQP to conduct sessions on 5S in their five day Integrated Productivity Development Programme.

In August this year the President of SLAAQP was invited to conduct a full day workshop on Super 5S in Lahore, Pakistan, which was organised by the Pakistan Institute of Quality Control.

Wijesinha showed many visual examples of good 5S practices in Sri Lankan companies. Seeing this several participants requested a study tour to Sri Lanka to obtain first-hand experience of 5S implementation in model Sri Lankan organisations.
