Fuel hike can be eased through proper planning - Dinesh

Burdens befallen on the people due to the fuel price hike can be eased through proper planning: said Minister of Urban Development and Water supply Dinesh Gunawardena. He expressed this view at the inauguration of the construction activities of the Tummodara and Kosgama new Post office complexes on 2004-09-23.

Tummodara, situated in the Colombo District is a town with minimum infrastructure facilities. The Post office located in a small building was the only place providing communication facilities to all the people in the surrounding villages. Lack of telephone facilities in the area has created the necessity of a fully equipped Post office in its place.

The Deputy Speaker Gitanjana Gunawardena who understood this requirement of the people, intervened to get two new Post office buildings approved by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication for Tummodara as well as Kosgama and obtain an allocation of Rs. 10 million for both. Minister Gunawardena further said: "No person in the world can control the price of Petroleum.

The burdens heaped on the people on account of the fuel price hike can only be controlled by proper planning. As a people friendly Government we are committed to solve the burning issues of the people. It is our duty to take this country on the path of progress for which the government has taken many meaningful steps.

Our efforts to convert this Post office to a fully-fledged one were thwarted by a 'no-activity' (nonagathe) period. This period, which denied the people their dues, is over now. The time has come when the UPFA government is handing over the country's development to the people. We have prepared plans to develop new towns like this and re-start the development process suspended by the previous regime."

Minister of Post and Telecommunication D. M. Jayaratna said: What we are planning to establish here is not a traditional type of Post office. It will be one equipped with facilities for the people to talk to or send a letter to any person in any part of the world within few seconds.

In the field of education we shall implement programs to help students to gain knowledge and even purchase education equipment cheaply here. This post office will be developed as a place, which provides many utility services to the people. We do not limit our activities to laying foundation stones.

We hope to finish this work by the end of the year and open it to the public. Since public funds are spent for these activities, it is up to the people to ensure that they are properly used." Deputy Minister of Posts, Telecommunication and Upcountry Development Rohitha Abeugunawardena, Deputy Speaker Hon. Gitanjana Gunawardena, the former Minister Indika Gunawardena and the Provincial Councillor Sumith Soyza too joined this function.
