Douglas lauds President's statement

by Rajmi Manatunga

EPDP Leader and Hindu Affairs and Agricultural Marketing Development Minister Douglas Devananda yesterday lauded President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's statement condemning the killing spree of the LTTE and called upon the LTTE to enter into democratic process.

Minister Devananda told the media yesterday that the EPDP discussed the spate of violence perpetrated by the LTTE in the North-East and Colombo and the security of individuals holding anti-LTTE views with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga twice this week.

"We appreciate the interest taken by the President in the issue. At the same time we urge the LTTE to renounce violence and return to the negotiating table as a democratic organisation," he said.

Commenting on the security threat faced by EPDP members and supporters, Devananda said the EPDP will never take up arms to defend themselves.

"The EPDP gave their weapons back once and for all under the Ceasefire Agreement. The Government has beefed up the security of our members and we are grateful for that. We are satisfied with the present security measures," he added.
