News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | VAT off on rice, sugar, milk foods The Government is to remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) on rice, sugar and milk foods and hope to implement this from next week. The Government also decided to increase the volume of infant milk-food production in the country. The Government in its endeavour to bring down the cost of goods in the near future, appointed a Special Committee with the President, the Prime Minister and the Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister as members to study the cost of living and make recommendations to the next Cabinet meeting. At the weekly Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers discussed at length the cost of living and how they could bring it down. The Ministers focused their attention to the increase in the price of oil in the world market and its impact on the cost of living. They were of the view that the Government should adopt "alternative means" to combat the high cost of living. Another Committee was appointed to study it and make recommendations to the Cabinet. Meanwhile, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga making a special statement regarding the peace process said representatives of all political parties would be convened to a meeting to consider their views to entering into a new path to resume peace talks. This meeting will be held next Monday. |
