Colombo Consumers Price Index for September

The Colombo Consumers' Price Index (CCPI) for the month of September 2004 was 3684.7.

This shows an increase of 48.8 index points or 1.3 per cent from the August 2004 index number of 3635.9. This is an increase of Rs. 98.77 in the Expenditure Value of "Market basket" when compared to August, 2004, states Government Information Department release.

The increase in the CCPI for September, 2004 is manly due to increase in prices of rice, bread, bread and curry, sugar, milk tea, cummin seed, tamarind, limes, red qnions, cowpea whole, some varieties of fresh fish and dried fish, arrack, cinema rates, bus fare and cigarattes. These price increases in food items can be mainly attributed to short supply of consumer goods to the main markets in Colombo City and the influence of recent price increases of fuel. However, prices of fresh fish - paraw, shark, dried fish - koduwa and some varieties of vegetables have decreased during this month.

Annual inflation rate on the basis of 12 months moving average increased to 5.4 per cent in September, 2004 from 49 per cent in August, 2004.
