ISKCON Sri Lanka, part of a global body with over 450 temples, farms and pure vegetarian restaurants the world over has organised this Ratha Yatra, Chariot Festival in Colombo with the theme - 'peace in our country'. Such Ratha Yatras have over the years, been regular annual events in some major cities of the world such as London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Singapore, and several cities throughout India. The historical antecedents of the Ratha Yatra tradition date back to over 5,200 years. Lord Krishna was visiting Kurukshetra in His chariot to observe an ancient Vedic custom and tradition of bathing at a holy spot during a solar eclipse. He was accompanied by his brother Balram, (the first expansion of Krishna), and sister Subadra (his spiritual energy). On that auspicious occasion he met several of his childhood friends, who not able to bear the separation from Him over the years, implored Him to come back to Vrindavan. The Lord, having agreed, was drawn all the way back to Vrindavan in his chariot by his friends as a token of appreciation and affection. The Ratha Yatra commemorates and symbolises that event, Dr. Subash Chawla, Chairman, Board of Governors, International Society for Krishna Consciousness, said in a press release. |
