International Day of Older Persons today

International Day of Older Persons falls today. This follows a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990. The following year the General Assembly adopted the "UN Principles for Older Persons" encouraging governments to incorporate them into national programmes whenever possible.

The ageing of the population today is without parallel in the history of humanity. Increases in the proportions of older persons (60 or older) are being accompanied by declines in the proportions of the young (under age 15). The current demographic revolution is predicted to continue for a long time.

By 2050 the number of older persons in the world will exceed the number of young for the first time in the history of mankind, the United Nations said yesterday in a news release. Population ageing is already having major consequences in all areas of day-to-day human life and it will continue to do so. This situation requires appropriate changes in policy approaches towards almost all spheres of human activity.
