National Tree Planting Program

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will implement the Natural Tree Planting program this year too, with the prime objective of maintaining a quality environmental balance and renewing the fast depleting forest cover in the country.

A ministry press release said this year's National Tree Planting Day falls on October 15 and Cabinet approval has been granted to declare the ensuing month from that date as the National Tree plating month. The ministry considered this is very appropriate because it was in October that a major part of the Country received a considerable rainfall and Maha cultivations were launched. To mark this year's Tree Planting Program, the ministry hopes to launch various tree planting programs on national, provincial, District, Divisional Secretary division and village level on October 15.

All Ministries have been requested to assist this program by ensuring that all institutions, Departments and agencies under them implemented well planned and fruitful tree planting programs with follow up action to maintain and nurture the trees so planted. Home gardens, school compounds, road sides, banks of tanks, rivers and other waterways and other suitable areas could be utilised for these tree planting programs.

Attention should also be drawn to protect catchment areas by planting trees like bamboo, kumbuk and karanda which helped soil conservation and also maintaining plant nurseries to support the program. Plants needed for this program could be obtained from. The Department of Forest Conservation by contacting Deputy Conservator Anura Sathurusinghe (Telephone 0112-866626) or the respective district forest officers with details of the planned tree planting programs.
