by P. Krishnaswamy The first shipment of 20,000 tons of Indian rice will arrive here shortly and will be made available to local consumers at a comparatively lower price in the open market, Dinesh Fernando, Media Secretary to Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ministry told the Daily News. He said this is a sequel to the visit Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle has undertaken to India and discussions he had with Ministers and high level officials of both the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka State governments. The Minister has been making efforts to bring down the spiralling COL and to ease the burden on the common man. He is studying various options to reduce the prices of some of the essential food items, Fernando said. Fernando said the Minister was in contact with high level officials of countries in the region, including India and Pakistan. He undertook a visit to India two days ago to expedite the shipment of good quality Indian rice from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka States. Fernandopulle is in Bangalore after meeting officials in Chennai and will be returning to the island on October 4, the Media Secretary said. He quoted the Minister as having informed him that the initial stock of the 20,000 tons of rice which includes 'samba' and red rice will be shipped by the first available ship. Other varieties of rice will be included in the consequent shipments, he said. |
