Foreign job preference for Samurdhi beneficiaries

Sri Lankans from poor families and beneficiaries of the Samurdhi program will be given preference in foreign employment opportunities, a senior official of the Foreign Employment Bureau told Lankapuvath.

"This project initiated on Minister Athauda Seneviratne's direction will be easier to implement where employment deals are between governments," Bureau Chairman Karunasena Hettiarachchi said. "But it is not easy when we have to rely on the private sector as well".

Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies (ALFEA) President Suraj Dandeniya said his organisation supports this idea mooted by the bureau.

"It will be beneficial for our country to secure jobs for Samurdhi recipients," Dandeniya said.

Meanwhile, the Government will provide relief to Samurdhi Ministry employees who were politically victimised during the previous regime.

This was decided on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's directive. Deputy Minister Jagath Pushpakumara said a committee appointed by Samurdhi Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has been empowered to provide relief to the Ministry's political victims.

The Deputy Minister said Samurdhi Ministry employees who were politically victimised during December 5, 2001 to April 2, 2004 should inform the Ministry in writing about the grievances to provide relief. -Lankapuvath
