President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has directed the Minister of Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation, Pavithra Wanniarachchi to implement a special development programme for the uplift of 30,000 families selected out of the Samurdhi beneficiaries. Relevant data about 50,103 families to be exposed to an accelerated development programme covering all the districts in the island have been collected and out of them 30,000 families have been selected for these self-employment projects, states Samurdhi Ministry sources. In Sri Lanka 1,034 Samurdhi Bank Societies are operating on a zonal basis and according to the above selections about 30 families from each Bank Society have been accommodated in the programme. Under these new projects the selected families are to receive loan facilities, training, necessary guidance and technical know-how. Providing them with interest-free loans is receiving attention. Provincial Council Secretaries will assist in implementing this programme. Samurdhi Managers and Samurdhi Development Officers are being briefed at the moment. This innovative and ambitious programme for the uplift of poor families is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on November 1 this year, sources said. |
