Rebel strike shuts down Nepal KATHMANDU, Tuesday (Reuters) A strike by rebels shut down more than a third of Nepal on Tuesday, including Kathmandu, the latest stoppage in their campaign for a communist republic after last month's crippling road blockade of the hill-ringed capital. Most buses and taxis stayed off the streets in Kathmandu in response to the two-day strike called by the Maoist rebels in the east of the kingdom to protest the killing of two leaders by government troops early this month. Soldiers carrying automatic weapons patrolled the streets of the capital and stood guard at government buildings. There were no reports of violence, an official said. Few of Kathmandu's 1.5 million people dared to defy the strike, fearing attacks from rebels. Thousands of children stayed home as schools and colleges closed. Businesses were also expected to remain shut.. |
