We have reorganised UNP on democratic principles - MP

by Avissawella group correspondent

We have reorganised the UNP to suit democratic principles and fulfil the aspiration of the people to work for their benefit indiscriminately vesting all powers in the hands of a Polit Bureau under this system even the party leader cannot take a decision without consulting the Polit Bureau. It is the central authority which directs the party, said Sarath Ranakawa, Kalutara district MP at a UNP workshop held at the Avissawella town hall to educate the members on the re-organisation of the party.

He said that today the membership has the power to fight against any decision of the party. We are determined to protect the political rights of the people and their participation is considered most important in the field of politics. Provision have been provided to the ordinary member to climb to the highest position and obtain a super membership which has an insurance cover. There are four kinds of members. Haritha, Rajatha, Swarna and Hasthi Raja. The promotion will be given on merits and contribution to the program of the party.

He said that under the present system no person can become a member only by paying the subscriptions. He has to perform several things to get a membership. He said that the UNP failed to go to the masses and fulfil their needs. They gave priority to development process, peace and economy.

The JVP shrewdly took advantage of this and mobilised the people to achieve their goal.

The Ven. Mahopadya Werahera Ariyawansa Adhikarana Sangha Nayaka and the Ven. Millewe Mahinda Thera, John Amaratunga MP for Gampaha district and Jayantha Ketagoda former MP and Avissawella UNP organiser also spoke. K.D.P. Arsakularatne, Chairman Seetavakapura UC delivered the welcome speech.
