Lanka lose to Taipei 3-0

by Bernard Perera

Sri Lanka Junior women spikers failed to impress on the third day of the 12th Asian Junior volleyball championship yesterday losing to second seed Taipei in straight sets (3-0).

From the word go Taipei girls kept pressure on the hosts, taking a firm lead. They went ahead giving no room for the small-made Lankans to collect points. Visitors held a good lead after ten minutes of play 13-3.

Lankan lasses collected one point at this stage taking the advantage on faults made by their opponents. But the visitors did not make any mistakes after that and went on to pile up points at will through their power-packed smashes.

Lankans were helpless at this stage. Taipei girls made good use of their height and weight to maximum use to win the set 25-7.

The second set commenced and as expected Taipei went on the points chase to collect five points before Lankans could get any. Visitors scores at will also went on to win the set and at 25-7 to lead 2 sets to nil.

The third set saw Lankans come back strongly taking a lead 3-2 in the early stages. But the Taipei girls got to the act again and got pass the Lankan score and kept on moving until the finish to take set 25-13.

This saw Sri Lanka give a real fight breaking many smashes, but failed to capitalise on these to collect points. Sri Lankan skipper Irosha Udyani, and Isanka showed that they are capable of collecting points from their smashes. If they adopted this tactic earlier they could ended up with better scores in the earlier sets.

Sri Lankans got past the ten point mark for the first time in this set.

In the earlier game, Australia playing in Group A crushed Maldives three sets to nil in a one-sided affair.

The Aussies cruised to a comfortable victory scoring 25-9, 25-10, 25-9.

In a another Pool B game Thailand overcame India also in straight sets 3-0. They had all three sets in their favour, 25-17, 25-19, 25-15.

Today Sri Lanka is scheduled to play Korea at 3 p.m. in a Group A game. There are three more matches scheduled for the day.

Thailand-Japan at 9 a.m. Maldive-Taipei at 11 a.m. and China-Japan at 5 p.m.
