Skipper Vaughan sends Aussies downunder

Elmo Rodrigopulle reporting from England

Edgbaston, Tuesday, England led brilliantly by Michael Vaughan completely outplayed the World Champions Australia by 6 wickets to enter the ICC Champions Trophy final, after winning the toss and putting Australia in.

Marcus Trescothick who survived a confident LBW decision off McGrath grabbed the chance with both hands and together with his skipper Michael Vaughan made an excellent meal out of a Aussie attack that lacked salt and pepper.

Trescothick and Vaughan put their bid of winning the trophy on rails with high class batsmanship. They were not overawed by the Aussie pace attack with Trescothick being particularly severe on McGrath hitting him for 16 in one over.

Vaughan who bowled well to take two wickets, caped it with a masterly 86 in 122 balls. Together with Trescothick who made 81 in 88 balls they put on a massive 140 for the second wicket after losing Vikram Solanki for 7 with the total on 21.

Then left-hander Andrew Strauss joined his skipper and put on another 66 runs which sealed the fate for the Aussies.

The Australian bowling fell to pieces during this assault. Strauss remained on an unconquered on 52 with his 50 coming in just 39 balls.

Ponting's captaincy which was top class, suddenly dipped and his bowling changes and field placings left much to be desired. The Aussies who came with big hopes now head home a disappointed lot.

The man of the match was Michael Vaughan. Australia brought in Brett Lee and left out Shane Watson. That was the only change Australia made from their team that beat New Zealand at the Oval. England remained unchanged from the team they played against Sri Lanka.

Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden did not find any terrors in the bowling of Darren Gough and Stephen Harmison and put on 44 with some nice strokeplay and running between the wickets. Hayden was the first to go when he played too early and snicked Harmison for wicket keeper Jones to take the catch. Hayden had a 6 in his 17.

Gilchrist who was threatening dollied one to Trescothick in the slips and went for 37 off Gough. Ponting trying to loft Giles over the fence was nicely caught by Gough for 29. Gilchrist went at 69 and Ponting at 114.

Then Damien Martyn and Darren Lehmann brightened things for the Aussies who are trying their dearness to grab this trophy. Lehmann was the more aggressive, hitting out at every delivery, while Martyn was confidently stroking the ball. Lehmann went for 38.

When Lehmann went at 118 after adding 75 with Martyn, it was a comedy errors that was witnessed when Andrew Symonds who is top form was foolishly run out. After an appeal for LBW Symonds dashed down the wicket when there was no run and Vaughan easily ran him out before he could trouble the scorers. Symonds out would probably have lost for Australia the game.

Martyn completed a smart half century, driving and pulling beautifully before he was caught in the outfield for 65.

Michael Clarke and Brett Lee put on a breezy stand of 39 which took Australia to 259 for 9 in their 50 overs. Clarke made some audacious strokes in his hard hit 42. The England bowlers were intelligently handled by Vaughan who himself captured 2 for 42 and Darren Gough 3 for 48.

The England team and their supporters were delighted and jumped for joy because this win against Australia came after 5 long years.
