Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel Golf Classic : 

Yvonne and Mohan triumph

In the Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel 'Stableford' golf tournament held last weekend at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, Mohan Ratnayake, excelled to triumph in the Men's 'A' division to win a trophy and a return air ticket to London, whilst in the 'B' division, Dilip Kodikara, came out on top to receive a memento and a return air ticket to London.

The Ladies 'A' division saw, Yvonne Abhayaratne, doing well to win, and be awarded a souvenir and a return air ticket to Singapore, with B.K. Lee, being the winner in the Ladies 'B' division.

Much enthusiasm and keenness prevailed amongst the juniors in the under 13 years and under 16 tournaments.

Setting the stage, by way of a preliminary to this much looked forward to fourth annual N'-Eliya Grand Hotel Golf Classic, was the enjoyable fellowship get together held on Friday evening at the supper club of the hotel - where invitees and guests, along with those competing indulged in small talk, viewing as well their prospects on the N'Eliya Golf Course on the morrow.

Under bright sunshine, dear blue skies and plush green foliage, the N'Eliya golf course on Saturday was near perfect for the golfers men and women, to pit their might against each other for championship honours.

Despite the competition that lay ahead for the golfers, a carnival atmosphere. In the Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel 'Stableford' Golf tournament held last weekend at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.

Mohan Ratnayake stood out in the men's 'A' division with a Stableford score of 38 pts: followed by Errol Johnston 37, Ranil Pathirana 37, Shechan Ramanayake 36 and Sanjay Wettimuny 33, Dilip Kodikara won the Men's 'B' division with 36 pts: ahead of A.S. Rahim 36, D. Palihena 32, Lal De Mel 31 and T. Fernandopulle 30.

In the women's 'A' division Yvonne Abhayaratne won with 39 pts: leading Suwen Selvaratnam 36, Rani Brenan 34, Kumari Herath 34 and N. Yoon 31. In the women's 'B' division B.K. Lee won with 28 pts and was ahead of I. Rasmussen 25.

The gala awards ceremony which took place on Saturday night in the congenial atmosphere of the Ballroom of the Grand Hotel, initially had addresses from the MD-GHNE, Gerard Ondaatjie, who thanked all those involved in the tournament, and from the President NEGC - N.E.G. de Silva.
