ICC on guard against 'Ambush Marketing'

Elmo Rodrigopulle reporting from England

The International Cricket Council would relentlessly guard against what they call 'ambush marketing' when it conducts cricket's second ICC Champions Trophy beginning here on September 10.

According to Malcolm Speed, Chief Executive ICC, England the tournament along with ICC and the Wales Cricket Board, would be guarding and keeping an eye on products being brought into the grounds being used to create exposure or profile for an organisation that has nothing to do as a partner of the International Cricket Council.

According to Speed it is important that any sports body has the right to control what is being brought into their events. This right is important from both a safety and security point of view as well as being able to protect the millions of pounds investment that sport's commercial partners make to allow these events to take place.

'In the case of the ICC Champions Trophy, it is not the intention to create hardship or difficulties for those cricket fans coming to the event simply to enjoy the cricket. Security staff for the event will be instructed to be sensible and sensitive when applying that policy to cricket fans coming to the ground to enjoy the matches', said Speed.

According to Speed it is the absolute intention of the ICC to stop organisations 'ambusing' the ICC Champions Trophy to try and gain exposure or profile that they are not entitle to and they will ruthlessly ensure that this does not take place by guarding against products being taken into the ground with the intention of creating exposure or profile to the detriment of our global sponsors - LG, Pepsi, Hutch and Hero Honda.

The ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC World Cup are two international tournaments conducted by the ICC.

When the tournament was previously held in Sri Lanka, the tourney ran into problems with 'ambush' marketing taking place. But thankfully to the satisfaction of everyone, the game and the International Cricket Council the matter was solved amicably and it is not likely that the ICC will run into similar problems in this tournament.

Kenya and the United States of America will join the 10 Test playing nations in the ICC Champions Trophy from September 10 to 25 with Edgbaston in Birmingham, the Rose Bowl in Hampshire and the London Oval conducting the 15 matches.

In addition to keeping an hawkeye on 'ambush' marketing, the Anti Corruption panel of the ICC will also keep their eyes and ears open to net those endeavouring to play that different game - match fixing.

All teams have arrived and have played their friendly game and they are confident of excelling in the tournament proper.
