To achieve permanent peace:

All parties should extend support to President, says Anwer

All political parties, especially Muslim parties, should support President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's leadership to resolve the North East problem under her leadership as she had put the country before her party after stepping down as the UPFA leader, SLFP Colombo District Organiser Fowzan Anwer said.

He urged all political parties irrespective of political differences to support her efforts to bring permanent peace to the country as she has already taken a bold decision by stepping down as the UPFA leader in the name of peace.

"She has taken this bold decision to commit herself to bring permanent peace to this country and for the sake of development of the country," he added.

Anwer said the time was ripe for Muslims to gather under one leadership sans political differences to make one voice at the peace talks on behalf of the Muslim community specially in the East as they can trust President Kumaratunga's leadership.

He said the political parties shouldn't fear about the President's decision at the peace talks as she always takes decision in favour of the country after consulting all political parties. "Peace talks will no way be a secretive one under the leadership of President Kumaratunga," Anwer added.

"People are aware of what she has done for the country as she was the Head of State for three consecutive regimes, the People's Alliance, United National Front and the United People's Freedom Alliance," he added.

People should understand that she had never in her life taken revenge from any person despite the assassination of her father, her husband and attempts on her own life by the LTTE and the taking away her mother's civic rights, Anwer said.

"Everyone, irrespective of their political affiliations should admire her commitment towards the country and her personal qualities," he added.

Muslims should not miss the chance to bring permanent peace to the country under the President's leadership and should rally round under a "broad minded senior Muslim politician" to make their representation at the peace talks.

Political parties should think of the country at this moment without resorting to take political advantages.
