Theft of passports: two held

A minor employee and a private security officer attached to the Immigration and Emigration Department were taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department in connection with stealing six new passports.

Investigations revealed that the minor employee had been paid Rs. 71,000 by the private security officer to collect the six new passports.

The CID DIG had deployed a special team to trace the agents who had given the contract to the private security officer to remove the passports from the Immigration and Emigration Department.

Health Minister Maldives bound

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will leave for the Maldives tonight to attend the 22nd Health Ministers' Conference of the World Health Organisation.

The conference which will be held from September 5 to 9 will focus on health related issues faced by South Asian countries, the Minister told the Daily News.

He said the conference would also focus on developing the specific areas in the health sector of these countries including Sri Lanka and also obtaining funds. The Minister said he was planning to submit certain proposals to obtain funds to further improve the country's primary healthcare system.
