US extradites Sri Lankan convicted of sexual assault The United States yesterday extradited to Sri Lanka Devanika Aswin Kumar Sinnathamby, a Sri Lankan convicted in the High Court of Colombo in 2002 for sexually assaulting his five-year-old daughter. Prior to sentencing, Sinnathamby fled Sri Lanka and eventually arrived in the United States. In April 2002 Sinnathamby was sentenced in absentia to 36 years in prison, the maximum penalty available. In May 2002, the High Court of Colombo issued an arrest warrant for Sinnathamby for his failure to attend his sentencing hearing, states a US Embassy press release. "We're pleased we were able to locate this convicted paedophile and return him to Sri Lanka to carry out his sentence," said James F. Entwistle, the Charge'd Affaires at the US Embassy in Colombo. "This is just another example of the excellent cooperation our two governments enjoy in the area of law enforcement, as in many other areas," Entwistle added. In June 2004 US law enforcement authorities located Sinnathamby in California. Based on an outstanding warrant for Sinnathamby's arrest, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents arrested him and an Immigration Service Judge approved his deportation to Sri Lanka. |
