Special program to provide relief for drought hit students The Ministry of Education has drawn up a special program to provide urgent relief to students affected by the drought in the North Central Southern and Uva Provinces. Under this program, it is hoped to provide temporary water tanks, parcels of dry food rations and needy school equipment to affected schools with the assistance of 32 National Schools in the Colombo District. Education Ministry Secretary Dr. (Mrs.) Tara de Mel discussed the implementation of this program with the Principals of the 32 Colombo National Schools at a meeting at the Ministry on Tuesday, said a Ministry release yesterday. Director National Schools P.H.P. Geeganage also participated in the meeting. The release said steps have already been taken to provide urgent relief under this program to Medirigiriya, Minneriya, Hingurakgoda Ananda Balika and Royal Madya Maha Vidyalayas in the Polonnaruwa District, Medawachchiya and Eppawala Madya Maha Vidyalayas in the Anuradhapura District, Suriyawewa, Angunakolapelessa, Zahira and Debarawewa Madya Maha Vidyalayas in the Hambantota District and Buttala Dutugemunu, Thanamalwila, Nissanka and Wellassa Maha Vidyalayas in the Moneragala District. Among the Colombo schools supporting this relief program are Ananda College, Royal College, Visakha Vidyalaya, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Musaeus College, Gothami Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Devi Balika, Thurstan and D.S. Senanayake Vidyalayas and Muslim Ladies College and Hameed Al Husaniya Vidyalaya. The release added that the Sri Lanka Red Cross and the Hatton National Bank have also come forward to assist this program. |
