Truce monitor to convey Govt's message to LTTE

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Government while condemning the incidents taking place in the East yesterday told the Truce Monitor to convey the message to the LTTE to settle their own problems without putting the blame on the Security Forces for murders of their cadres by the rival factions.

Defence Secretary Cyril Herat told the 'Daily News' last night that the Government conveyed its displeasure to the SLMM over the incidents taking place in the East and told them to take the issue with the LTTE.

Army Commander Lt. General Shantha Kottegoda has conveyed the message that the Security Forces had nothing to do with the killings and added that the LTTE should put their House in order without blaming the Security Forces.

The Army Chief has condemned the attacks on Security Forces by the LTTE in Batticaloa during the past few days.

"The SLMM is concerned about the situation in the East but they have no powers to take action over the ceasefire violations other than taking this issues with the parties concerned", Herat added.

Meanwhile SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News last night that the SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde is due to visit Kilinochchi today to take up the prevailing situation in the East with the LTTE Political Wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan. He said SLMM Chief will also take several other matters pertaining to the ceasefire agreement with the LTTE Political Wing leader.

He added the Truce Monitors were concerned about the prevailing situation in the East and said it was a threat to the ceasefire agreement.

However, he pointed out that it was the responsibility of the parties to improve the security in the respective areas.

"The Government has to improve the security in the East to prevent killings in government controlled areas and the LTTE in their areas", Haukland added.

"It is the responsibility of both parties to abide by the Ceasefire Agreement", Haukland added.
