No signs of a general election within five years - Chief Minister Reginold Cooray

Kalutara group correspondent

As there are no signs of a general election to be held within another five years one should not be afraid to take decisions which are beneficial and favourable to the society at large; accordingly one should not fear to take necessary decisions when it comes to the transfer of teachers who have completed ten years in a school or those who are lacking in efficiency, said Reginold Cooray, Chief Minister of the Western Province.

He was addressing a meeting held at the Kalutara Gnanodaya Vidyalaya for the distribution of prizes to the winners of the 2002-2003 all island, provincial and district competitions.

Further he said it is pleasure to note that Kalutara Gnanodaya Vidyalaya has not only achieved and important place among the district, Western Province and all island schools but also has a special place defeating some of the National Schools and special schools and has achieved the Navodaya School status.

It is notable that about 1,084 applications have been received seeking admission to the Grade One, 2005 and over 2,000 students are receiving their education at this institution. This number is quite sufficient considering the facilities already available in the school and suitable action will be taken to complete this building that is under construction, he stated.

Nirmala Kotalawala, Kalutara District MP said in the present society everything is being changed and the world is marching forward to progress in technology. Therefore our system of education too should be changed in its application of technology to suit our country, society and the culture, he said.

The development that should take place should be in keeping with the availability of suitable jobs for our future generation, he stated.

L.B. Weerasinghe the Principal of Gnanodaya Vidyalaya also spoke.
