This was revealed by the Minister of River Basin Development and Rajarata Development and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena, at a press conference at the party headquarters at Darley Road, yesterday. The present party headquarters was established in 1973 by the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike with the victory of the General Election in 1970. "The present party headquarters does not have the latest information technology and other adequate facilities. Therefore we thought of shifting to a newly designed headquarters with latest technology and also with a huge auditorium, a research unit, documentation library, mini-theatre, cafeteria and also with accommodation facilities for party members from remote areas. The project is estimated to cost 100 million rupees and several senior party members and well-wishers have come forward with donations," he said. The new party headquarters will be situated in a two acres land next to the Environmental Authority and is expected to be completed within 14 months. Meanwhile the 53rd special commemoration ceremony of the SLFP will be held this year on September 4 in Galle. The significance of this year's festival is that selected 10 senior party members from each electorate will be honoured by President Kumaratunga on this day. The President is also expected to introduce a new development policy to the country on this day. Minister of Ports and Aviation and Media Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala de Silva, International Trade Affairs Advisor to the President and the Governor of Southern Province Kingsley T. Wickremaratne and the Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana were also present. |
