Yakkala group correspondent A programme to develop base hospitals at the initial phase and all other hospitals by 2006 in the Western Province undertaken, said WPC Health and Children's Welfare Minister, Prasanna Ranatunga during his inspection of Gampaha base hospital recently. Gampaha district MP and Public Administration and Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Pandu Bandaranayake was also present. He said improvements to hospitals would be done in consultation with the hospital committees and Medical Superintendents. Some hospital authorities do not welcome the mediamen who expose the shortcomings in hospitals. Although a sum of Rs. 400 million is required for the administration of health services in the Western Province the amount allocated is a mere Rs. 225 million which is dismally low. Although four trade unions have presented proposals for their respective trades, they should also make their proposals for improvement of hospital services. 'It is not also advisable to depend entirely on government funds for hospital maintenance work but voluntary organisations, philanthropists and other organisations should get together to provide a satisfactory service to the public, he stressed. He instructed the hospital authorities to make arrangements to open the paying ward shortly and to deploy more pharmacists to clear the rush for medicine at hospital counters. Medical Superintendent, Dr. Sugath Dharmaratne, Provincial Councillor, Varuna Deepika Rajapakse, Hospital Committee Chairman, Dhammika Gunawardena and several others spoke. |
