by Chamikara Weerasinghe Police will remove unattended vehicles parked in unauthorised areas in the City from next month in keeping with a circular issued by Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order, Tilak Ranaviraja. Director, Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Lucky Peiris yesterday said that unattended vehicles in prohibited areas would be towed to the nearest police station in accordance with the new circular. Owners of these vehicles will have to pay towing charges for their vehicles to police stations, he said. Steps will be taken to prosecute them on the charges of obstructing roads and neglecting the highways law, the SSP said. He said that special police teams will be deployed to detect unattended motor vehicles throughout the city. He cautioned that drunken drivers will have to face suspension of their driving licences in addition to having to pay fines. Peiris also disclosed that police had launched a number of surprise traffic operations during late hours on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Indra De Silva, to arrest those driving after consuming alcoholic beverages and intoxicants. He said that police had arrested 63 drunk drivers in a two-day night traffic operation on August 20 and 21. They will be produced before Traffic Courts in due course, he said. |
