Foreign currency note smugglers fined

The two Sri Lankan businessmen who were attempting to smuggle out foreign currency notes to the value of over Rs.1.3 million were fined. The main suspect was fined Rs. 1.3 million and the other suspect was fined Rs. 10,000.

The two businessmen were arrested by a team of officials of the Customs Narcotics Division at the Bandaranaike International Airport on Friday morning.

Investigations directed by Customs Deputy Director Mali Piyasena revealed that the two suspects had clearance from Customs and had sent their baggage to the plane, Singapore bound SQ 401 at 1.35 a.m. yesterday.

On suspicion the Customs Narcotics officials later examined the baggage belonging to the suspects and found the foreign currency in US Dollars, Euro, Yen and Singapore Dollars, denominations to the value of Rs. 10 million and 3.7 million respectively.

This is the second detection by the Customs Narcotics Division during the last twenty four hours.

The detection was made by Assistant Superintendents of Customs W. A. N. Jayasinghe, M. G. S. Gamini, W. M. Seneviratne and G. S. Chandra.
