No private bus fare hike today

The private bus fare hike to be effected from today has been postponed to next week following warnings by bus operators of an islandwide strike.

A spokesman for the Transport Ministry told the Daily News that the decision was taken at a discussion between Transport Minister Felix Perera and private bus operators where the possibility of increasing the Rs 3 fare was taken up.

The Lanka Private Bus Operators Association (LPBOA) last week threatened to go on strike opposing the Cabinet decision not to increase the minimum Rs 3 fare in this year's nine per cent fare revision.

During the discussion the Minister has agreed to explain the position of the bus owners to the Cabinet next week following which the LPBOA suspended their plans to strike. However, LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said they would definitely go on strike from next Thursday if the Cabinet re-affirms the decision not to increase the minimum fare.
